Farmers carpark is now on ParkMate

Auckland CBD’s famous Farmers carpark is now available as an option for ParkMate customers!

The carpark is located on Hobson Street in between, Wyndham Street, Fanshawe Street and Bradnor Lane, and is a great parking location for lower central city, close to the viaduct’s many restaurants and bars and Commercial Bay for shopping. It’s also a convenient parking spot if you are catching the ferry for the weekend to visit Waiheke Island or need parking for the day for a hike on Rangitoto Island.

A little about the carpark:

Many Aucklanders will know the Farmers carpark is named not after a Farmer, but the Farmers Trading company, which today you will recognise as ‘Farmers’ in many shopping malls across New Zealand. The carpark sat opposite the main Farmers department store which is now the Heritage Hotel. There was even a walk-through bridge connecting the shop to the carpark for customers to easily access the store.

The site the store sat on was first developed in 1914 as a warehouse before growing into a multi-level retail department store in 1920’s, with a carpark first built in 1928 where the lobby to the Heritage Hotel now sits. The Farmers multi-level carpark was added around the 1950’s to accommodate the growing popularity of the store. The famous giant Santa also sat on this site before he was moved to Queen Street when Farmers relocated after closing the Hobson Street department store in 1992, due to the increasing popularity of the suburban malls.
