Happy Matariki

Matariki is when we celebrate the Māori New Year by celebrating the rising of the Matariki star cluster. This year we celebrate Matariki from the 19th June – 11th July.

Matariki is a great event that the whole family can enjoy, here are our top picks for ways to celebrate Matariki around New Zealand:


To celebrate Matariki in Auckland there are events at Britomart, Commercial Bay, Viaduct Harbour, Silo Park and Te Tōangaroa.

  • Matariki on the Waterfront – head to Silo Park on the 3rd or 4th July for a Matariki festival. At this annual event you'll find performances, workshops, craft stalls and lots of kai!

  • Matariki at Takutai Square – From the 23rd – 26th June 12pm to 2pm, Takutai Square will come alive with live kapa haka performances from groups all over Auckland. They'll also be a Hāngi and musicians keeping you entertained.

  • Matariki Te Korakora on Takutai – to celebrate the last day of Matariki enjoy an open-air music and food event. This free event showcases Māori musicians and is an event for the whole family.

Celebrate Matariki in Wellington with various events at the waterfront.

  • Matariki Fireworks – head to the Wellington waterfront on the 10th July for Matariki fireworks. The fireworks start at 6:30pm and they'll be lots of food trucks if heading down early.

  • Ahi Kā – Head to the Wellington waterfront on the 2nd and 3rd July between 5:30pm – 8pm for a Matariki celebration of ahi (fire), kai (food), storytelling, waiata (song) and entertainment. This is a family event and sure to be a hit with little ones.

Christchurch CBD will be lit up for Matariki.

  • Tirama Mai – the Tirama Mai event will see Christchurch lit up with a series of lighting installations, illuminated artworks and projections across Christchurch from Christchurch Art Gallery, Victoria Square, Worcester Blvd, Avon River Precinct, New Regent and New Brighton. The lighting walks will be open daily from the 25th June to the 10th July from 6pm – 11pm and will end with a Matariki firework celebration in New Brighton on July 10th.
